During a discussion on aging issues with Google's Gemini chatbot, a college student from Michigan was taken aback by the response generated by the AI tool.
During an interview with CBS News, 29-year-old student Vidhay Reddy disclosed that he had shared a screenshot with the media. He commented, "Its directness is quite alarming to me." Vidhay also shared that he was mentally fatigued for the whole day.
He began a conversation with a chatbot as part of a college project with his sister, Sumedha Reddy. While addressing the concerns surrounding aging, the twins were startled by the response given by the Gemini chatbot.
This screenshot displays the message that was sent by the Google Gemini chatbot:
Sumedha conveyed, "I instantly wanted to throw my computer and other devices out of the window. I have not felt such severe anxiety in a long time." She pointed out that mistakes are inherent in technology, and generative artificial intelligence can produce bizarre responses, but the reaction she faced was astonishing. Sumedha shared that her brother's support enabled her to find the courage to confront the situation.
Vidhay Reddy stated that companies must be held responsible for such actions, as they constitute legal harm. He emphasized that while it is inappropriate for an individual to make such statements, it is equally unacceptable for an AI tool to issue threats.
Google has reacted to this situation. Gemini indicated that the tool is equipped with safety filters. She explained that precautions have been established to prevent indecent, violent, and sexual expressions. However, this response is not accurate. Google has made a statement asserting that the matter is being addressed with seriousness and will not happen again.
